Hugh Elliot became British Ambassador to Spain in August 2019
The Mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, received the British ambassador to Spain in the Town Hall. Ambassador Hugh Elliot and British Consul Sara-Jane Morris were received with great enthusiasm by the local government. The visit was the first time that Ambassador Elliot had visited the city as first representative of the UK. The trip served to strengthen institutional ties, as Alicante is home to one of the seven UK consulates in Spain. It can be highlighted that around 90,000 Britons reside in the province of Alicante, whereas only 4,000 Alicante residents live in the United Kingdom. From a tourist point of view, almost 18.5 million Britons visit Spain every year, making the British Islands one of the biggest consumers of holidays in the country.
