NO CHANGE: Maritime Rescue helicopter will remain at Manises base Photo credit: Javea town hall
PRESSURE from Marina Alta municipalities paid off and the Salvamento Maritimo helicopter will remain at its Manises (Valencia) base. Javea was prominent amongst the Marina Alta town halls opposed to the Ministry of Public Works’ decision to relocate Maritime Rescue’s Helimer helicopter to Palma de Mallorca. Javea’s busy coastline registers frequent maritime incidents and accidents which inevitably involve numerous tourists as well the increasing problem of irregular immigrants making landfall in the area. The rapid arrival of the Helimer helicopter from Manises can be a matter of life or death, Javea town hall argued, and transferring it to Ibiza would complicate rescues. More than 20 of the area’s fishing guilds and yacht clubs were equally satisfied with the Ministry’s decision to halt the move. They, too, had previously argued that this would have lengthened the helicopter’s response time when carrying out rescue operations in a 167-kilometre section of the coast.
