UNEXPECTED: Flamencoin Plaza del Ayuntamiento Photo credit: Benidorm town hall
BENIDORM town hall recently hosted the Christmas Festival organised by Valencian Community’s Federation of Gypsy Associations (FAGA). The Festival, which was held in the town hall’s Function Room, began with a flash mob event in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento by members of FAGA and pupils who are taking part in the Edukalo programme coordinated by the town hall’s Social Welfare department. This continued insidethe Function Room with more flamenco dancing and carols by the Edukalo pupils who attend Benidorm’s state primary and secondary schools. One of the programme’s principal objectives is reducing school absenteeism amongst pupils from gypsy families, explained Social Welfare councillor who attended the Festival accompanied by Fiestas and Events councillor, Jesus Carrobles. Llorca also stressed that the programme also furthered the pupils’ knowledge of the history and culture of the gypsy community while orientating their families to help the children obtain the best results.
