THE most silent of thefts left a lorry filled with Spanish Jam looted as the gang of thieves stole the merchandise whilst the driver dozed in the cabin and was totally unaware that the 300 legs of ham he was transporting were stealthily removed.

The events, which are now being investigated by the National Police, took place during the early hours of Wednesday through Thursday of last week when the truck driver was heading to the city of Malaga to deliver the goods to various establishments in the run up to the Christmas period.

According to Diario Sur, the driver had decided to rest in a service area of the Las Pedrizas highway, near Venta Cotrina, as he was due to arrive in Malaga at dawn, when the establishments were due to open.

However when he woke from his deep slumber at 5.45 am, he was flabbergasted to find the trailer had been completed ransacked.

According to sources, the thieves forced the lock and took advantage that any noise made was muffled by the cooling system of the vehicle.

The stolen booty consisted of more than 300 legs of hams with an average price each of 140 euros.

The National Police were immediately alerted and are currently investigating the case.

Last year ended with 73 detainees and more than 2,000 people identified in similar thefts.
