CEREMONY: The winners of this years Poetry Contest CREDIT: Almuñécar City Council
A SPECIAL tribute has been made to Paulino Álvarez González at this year’s Poetry Contest awards gala in La Herradura, Spain. Organised by the Friends of La Herradura Association, audience members at the gala became overwhelmed in emotion as a heartfelt tribute was paid to Álvarez González by Alberto García Gilabert, Councillor for Culture. Álvarez was born in Galicia but lived in La Herradura for over two decades, dedicating his professional life to the promotion of the poetry contest. In a beautiful speech, García Gilabert stated that the best tribute to a man of such importance in the community “would be to remember and continue this poetry contest, which in a reality is thanks to him.” He added that the council will continue to drive their efforts into the competition, “to maintain and improve the event so that it remains a reference across Grenada.” The act was followed by a presentation of awards, which crowned Juan Carlos de Lara Ródenas for his poem ‘Paseo del chocolate y Depósito de objetos perdidos’ which translates to ‘In the deep half of oblivion.” García Gilabert then thanked all the residents that entered the competition as well as the jury “who together played an important role in continuing the splendour of the event”
