PARENTS of young children are being warned that the peak bronchitis season is being reached.

At the moment 14 children – mostly under the age of two – are hospitalised for the condition, with one in intensive care.

It is a highly contagious condition which is not uncommon and is normally treated at home. Extra care has to be taken with babies and young children or those suffering from heart or breathing problems.

The hospitalised children are in the general hospitals of Alicante, Elche and Sant Joan d’Alacant. The upturn in cases seen is expected to last for about six weeks.

Symptoms include cough, runny nose, fever and shortness of breath the treatment of which may last between two and three weeks.

Parents are advised to keep young children away from others suffering the condition wherever possible.
