Organisers say two editions of the work, called Comedian, each sold for around $120,000 (£91,000) – and the price of a third edition has now reportedly been raised to $150,000 (£114,000).

The first edition was sold to a French woman, while the second edition was snapped up by Frenchman.

Artist Cattelan – who picked the banana for his artwork in  a Miami supermarket – has reportedly decided to sell the third edition to a museum, with two institutions already having expressed interest.

The Euro Weekly News asked late night drinkers at the dolphin bar in Fuengirola their thoughts.

Scott Mcgregor Cafe owner said ” It’s bananas – come on someones surely having a laugh – your telling me if I open up tomorrow and stick a banana on the wall it’s worth 91 grand? – if that’s the case we are going to look like a banana plantation tomorrow when we open up” he laughed.

Minnie Williams had more of a serious approach she said ” It’s pathetic so pathetic – what a waste of money, look and think what 180 grand could do for homeless people or the starving people in this world – and here’s two people paying it for two bloody supermarket bananas and some tape!”

Dougie Donaldson said ”  Has to be a wind up surely – who on earth would pay that – pull the other one it may have bells on!” as he returned to his pint laughing.
