SPORT NEWS: Lionel Messi Wins His Sixth Ballon d’Or

IT’S OFFICIAL, Lionel Messi is the winner of the 2019 Ballon d’Or and makes history by becoming the first player ever to have won the trophy six times.

Messi was level with Cristiano Ronaldo, with five Ballon d’Ors, and now he has moved onto his unique level.

At a star-studded ceremony in Paris on yesterday (Monday) evening, the FC Barcelona star was crowned the world’s best player for the first time since 2015 seeing off strong competition from the likes of Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk.

Cristiano Ronaldo finished third in the voting.

At the ceremony, Luka Modric presented the Barcelona captain with the trophy, after the Croatian’s year of holding it in 2018 came to an end.

Messi was accompanied by his wife and two children, in addition to some of the club’s senior staff as he collected the trophy at the France Football gala.

Messi later posted a picture on Facebook with his family and the new addition giving thanks to those who voted for him:

“Thanks to France Football and the journalists who voted for me. I couldn’t have won this award without the help of my teammates, both those at FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team, and that’s why this prize is theirs too. Of course, it also belongs to my family, who I dedicate it to, and who give me such great support every day.”
