AFTER the terrorist attack on London Bridge this afternoon (November 29), it has been confirmed by Downing Street that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will chair an emergency Cobra committee meeting at 9.30pm.

Often labelled an emergency council, Cobra meets to discuss high-priority issues that cross departmental borders within government.

Cobra stands for ‘Cabinet Office briefing room A’, where the meetings are held in Downing Street within their Cabinet Office buildings. In most cases Cobra is convened as part of the civil contingencies committee, which plans government responses in times of an emergency, such as a terrorist attack.

The incident that took place today has been confirmed by the Metropolitan Police as a “terrorist incident” after a stabbing in the heart of London which claimed the lives of two members of the public. The suspect was shot dead and the police have said a device strapped to the body of the man was a hoax.
