SPORTS anglers from six countries will participate in the International Open Fishing competition “La Purísima” in Torrevieja

The entry of 52 pairs far exceeds what was expected by organisers in what will be the 13th edition of the event that runs from Friday (November 29) to Sunday.

The teams are made up of two anglers, with two pairs competing against each other on one boat, with all 26 boats anchored five miles out from Torrevieja.

This year competitors from Italy, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Portugal and Spain are taking part in the event.

From Spain there are teams from Andalucia, Region of Murcia, Catalonia, Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Comunitat Valenciana and Galicia.

On FRIDAY  evening the competition is officially launched and the draw for boats made, before the competition starts at 8 am on Saturday.

All catches made will be given to the local food banks to be distributed amongst the needy.

According to organisers the Fishing Open is a sustainable and environmentally friendly competition, in which the weighing judges ensure the species caught and their minimum sizes respect environmental rules.

This competition reflects the fact that the port of Torrevieja is a reference in the Valencian Community for sport fishing with two associations with their own jetties dedicated exclusively to sport fishing
