Military exercises in Gibraltar

The British Army on parade Credit: HM Government of Gibraltar

IF you are in Gibraltar at the tail end of this week and see more armed forces about then don’t worry, there isn’t an emergency despite sirens and flashing lights it’s just the annual contingency exercise.

Known as GIBEX, It’s carried out by the British Forces Gibraltar, coordinated by the Ministry of Defence with the aim of demonstrating that the British Forces are ready to react positively and effectively to the most likely challenges and scenarios facing the bases in Gibraltar.

Almost all activity is set to take place on MoD sites. This may include blank firing and simulated explosions and will see increased numbers of military and emergency services personnel out and about.

The intention is to test the ability of the British Forces to work with local services in the event of any emergency and there will be additional exercises organised by the Gibraltar Government in the New Year.
