SOME 600 runners pounded the streets of Roquetas de Mar for Sunday’s half marathon challenge.
Roquetas Mayor Gabriel Amat was at the starting line on Avenida Juan Carlos I to give the participants the ready, steady, go at 10am on an ideal sunny day for the third edition of the annual event.
The day earlier the youngsters running in the Media Kids junior half marathon had had to contend with grey skies and strong winds.
Nijar athlete Zouhaur Il Janati was first across the finishing line in the adult race. Zouhaur, who is originally from Morocco, covered the 21-kilometre distance in an impressive one hour, 11 minutes and 23 seconds, three minutes faster than last year’s winner.
Roquetas local Jose Miguel Martin Campos was just behind Zouhaur, with a time of one hour, 13 minutes and 27 seconds.
Paula Ramirez from Almeria city was the fastest woman. She clocked up a time of one hour, 27 minutes and 35 seconds. She was followed in second place in the feminine category by Roquetas resident Jo-Anne Barfoot.
Sports councillor Jose Juan Rubi said this year’s half marathon was an all-round success, promising next year it would be even better with the aim of making the race a national level event.
