Ham verses fruit in Benalmadena Costa del Sol

Hamming it up in Benalmadena

MANY towns, like Estepona, hold annual Ham Festivals where visitors have the chance to taste some of the best Jamon available at very reasonable prices and to watch the skill of the ham cutters at work.

Now Benalmadena will welcome its first contest organised by the National League of Ham Cutters which will be held at the headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Redemption in Calle Parra from 12.30pm on Sunday November 24.

There will be a selection of drinks and a taste of different hams will cost just €4 with any income going towards the cost of a new pallium on which statues are carried during religious festivals.

At the same time that this event was announced, the council reminded youngsters and parents of the need to fight obesity and launched the XXXV Fruit Day when all schools were encouraged to persuade those in their care to eat fruit.

Students are involved in promoting the concept and are encouraged to replace one snack meal such as a sandwich every day for a selection of healthy fruit for one week.
