A young mother desperately needs help on the Costa del Sol

Charlotte after the onset of GBS

TRAGEDY can hit anyone at any moment and young mother Charlotte Karlsen has had more than her fair share recently.

First her mother was diagnosed with cancer but she at least now appears to be on the road to recovery but then Charlotte was suddenly struck by a very rare condition, Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) which affects the nerves particularly in the hands and feet and limbs, causing numbness, weakness and pain.

In most cases it is curable, but it is a long journey and can take months and even years, but in the meantime, this young woman has to be helped and supported so that she has the strength to fight the syndrome and of course she has two daughters who rely upon her.

Money is a major worry as she is a single mother who worked in the Real Estate business as well as with a law firm but there is a strong family bond and after two months in hospital (Charlotte was on one floor and her mother on another) she is very slowly recovering a little at a time.

The family came to Spain from Norway in 1987 and currently live in Coin where sister Jeanette and her mother share a converted house and Charlotte is now living on the ground floor with her mother whilst her two daughters aged 13 and 15 are living upstairs with Jeanette.

Friend, Teresa Leaver who runs a boutique at El Oceano Hotel in La Cala de Mijas wanted to help and she has organised with the Palmer’s who own the hotel for a special fundraising dinner to be held at El Oceano on Monday December 16.

There will be a special meal costing €55 and entertainment will feature local favourite Arran Harding who was one of the founders of Tres Divos although he has a huge repertoire of different musical styles which has seen him perform regularly in Spain and the UK for more than 20 years.

With 800 songs in his catalogue and the ability to go from rock to opera, this will be a doubly special evening as he is travelling over from the UK to offer his support to Charlotte.

Reservations can be made via the El Oceano website https://www.oceanohotel.com/ and if you can’t make the evening but want to help visit the special fundraising page set up for Charlotte at https://www.facebook.com/donate/432206077498910/433518780700973/.
