Sporting heroes on Costa del Sol for Marca Sport Weekend Marbella

Boris Becker will be in Marbella

MARBELLA will be taking on a red tint for the ‘Marca Sport Weekend Marbella’ event. 

The ‘boats’ roundabout and the bridge of Santo Cristo del Amor will be illuminated red this weekend to match the colour of Spanish sports newspaper Marca as sporting heroes pay a visit to the Costa del Sol.

The event, organised by the City Council and the leading sports newspaper, will bring together more than 80 professionals and legends of sport in 50 free activities  

The event will begin on Friday with several highlights such as meetings with Boris Becker and Mick Doohan, the so-called ‘Craziest match in history’, which will feature footballers Vero Boquete, Diego Forlán and Carlos Cuellar with a hundred youth players. 

There will also be a talk and screening of the Spain-Malta match won by Spain 12-1 and considered the most incredible feat in the history of Spanish football.  

On Saturday, the programmes starts at 10.15 am, with the talk ‘Making a star’ by Toni Nadal, followed by a meeting with world record holder Hicham El Guerrouj and Fermín Cacho. 

There will also be an exhibition by the 2010 BMX world champion, Viky Gomez and simultaneous chess games against Anatoli Karpov. 

Football fans will be able to view a debate on the Spanish national leagues with the presence of the president of La Liga, Javier Tebas, and Atlético de Madrid’s Enrique Cerezo, among others. 

There will also be a ‘round table’ with the president of the Spanish Basketball Federation, Jorge Garbajosa; athletics and basketball clinics, the latter with Audie Norris; a conference with world long jump record holder Mike Powell and the inauguration of the Spanish Chess Championship. 

The event will close on Sunday, 17 November, with activities such as the round table ‘We are the champions’, in which Pedja Mijatovic, Christian Panucci, Miguel Ángel Nadal and Eusebio Sacristán will take part. 

There will also be a tennis clinic with Marc Lopez and zumba and personal defence workshops, and a world record attempt for 100 metres speed skating by Ioseba Fernández. 

Staying on skates, double world figure skating champion Javier Fernández will also be present. 

The Movistar cycling team will be at the show, as will former Real Madrid and Spain coach Vicente del Bosque. 

The weekend will be rounded off by a football match between Marbella FC and Yeclano Deportivo. 

The ‘Marca Sport Weekend Marbella’ programme, considered to be the biggest event of its kind to date in Spain, will be completed with street activities such as a bike circuit in the Arroyo de la Represa park, a basketball skills circuit, a road driving circuit for all ages, a shooting simulator, among others.
