Akira was created on April 1, 2011, after animal-lovers noticed the need for a shelter in the Teulada-Moraira and Benissa areas.

They held talks with both town councils with a view to securing suitable land and building a shelter while at the same time raising awareness and making the charity known.

After many setbacks the shelter was finally completed in 2016 although Akira had continued during all that time to rescue and rehome abandoned dogs in Spain, to the UK, Holland and Germany.

Akira has been active since the outset with fundraising events including BBQs, dances, wine-tastings, garden parties, the twice-monthly bookstall at Moraira market and monthly quiz nights in Benissa.

The group organises an annual May Fayre at the Font Santa in Teulada while the Zumbathon on Moraira seafront is always a huge success, as is Akira’s Christmas Dinner.
