ORIHUELA collected 898,649 kilos of glass for recycling in the summer months.
This represented a 7 per cent increase over the same period of 2018.
Councillor of Street Cleaning Damaso Aparicio, revealed that the ‘Ecovidrio’ campaign involved 145 hotels in the city. Half of all glass container used in the hospitality sector are single use, and 30 per cent of all glass collected for recycling comes in the summer months.
In recent years, the Department of Street Cleaning and USW has promoted recycling both at home and in the hospitality industry, with ever improving results. The councillor is now urging Ecovidrio to “increase its collection routes and numbers of bottle banks so that neighbors can continue recycling glass and exceed the current figure.”
According to the latest data for 2018, the citizens of Orihuela recycled a total of 2,502,360 kilos of glass, which means that each inhabitant recycles an average of 32.6 kilo a year.
Currently Orihuela has 694 bottle banks, working out at one per 111 inhabitants.
With respect to the rate of containerization, Orihuela is located with an average of 111 inhabitants per container, currently with a total of 694 igloos for waste glass containers installed.
