A 1.000-mile walk: Monaco to Marbella

Someone once said that everywhere is walking distance if you have the time. Mick Slater is putting this to the test with his incredible walk from Marbella to Monaco.

The busy dad and business owner decided to set work aside and spend the month of November completing a 1.000-mile walk to raise awareness for mental health.

After taking time out from his hectic life and supplement company Cheeky Nutrition, Mick is pushing his body to the absolute limit.

Every day he wakes up and walks for twelve full hours, reaching an average of 33 miles per day. And he will carry on until he reaches the beautiful city on the French Mediterranean.

When asked about the origins of this adventure, Mick was enthusiastic. ‘I love walking and I love Spain. At first, I’d been thinking about doing an Ultra marathon. But it’s very hard on the knees. So, I looked at the map and the idea came to life.’

All the strenuous walking is not in vain, as the whole adventure will be in support of mental health and the charity Mind.

Mind provides advice and support for anyone experiencing a mental health problem, as well as campaigning for better services and promoting understanding. Thanks to them, millions of people have access to help and support.

Supporting Mind is important to Mick, who explained his reasoning. ‘For me, there is a deep connection with the psychological effects of life. People are suffering in silence and aren’t living the life they want or reaching their full potential.’

Originally from South Derbyshire, Mick and his wife Karen moved to Marbella a year ago with their grown-up children Claire and Tom. His family, including daughter Hannah in the UK, have been great pillars of support and will help him tirelessly to reach his goals. The girls drive the section Mick will walk the next day, mainly to see conditions and make sure there are no obstacles. His family are also providing much needed encouragement at the end of the day.

The walk is treacherous in many stretches and Mick is fighting the elements. Bruised heels, large lorries and precarious conditions won’t stop Mick though, who says. ‘The walk wasn’t designed to be easy. I’m cutting sleep and dodging lorries. When you’re at the point where everything is against you, the negativity comes.’

However, Mick has a purpose to keep him going. ‘When people are literally taking their own lives, it’s as real as you can get. When I’m walking, it’s so real. I’m going through a personal transformation This is my walk to freedom.’

Mick is hoping for further support and hopes people with influence and a social media presence can help him. ‘I’m not only doing this for me, but for everybody. If we could get someone involved it would bring so much attention to the issue. I would like someone to walk with me for a day and to truly experience what I’m going through’.
