SEVENTEEN invasive species have been recorded in the waters of Santa Pola, and 24 per cent of them are poisonous.
Now a study done for the local Fishermen’s Guild says that each year there is a 20 per cent rise in probability of new species of tropical fish arriving in the Mediterranean due to climate change.
The guild is calling for more controls to be put in to restrict the growth of non-native species numbers as they can affect local wildlife.
They can also affect beachgoers, with for example, 200 reports of stings from the invasive Weever fish being reported in Santa Pola this summer.
