THE company that provides waste collection and street cleaning services in Torrevieja is using an area that is earmarked for a park as a dump.
Residents of the San Luis urbanisation, where the plot is located have denounced the company for dumping garden waste and prunings on the public land.
Images captured by Scandinavian and British residents show waste collection vehicles and trucks with the company logo, Acciona, throwing the material on to the patch of green bounded by calles Caravaca, Lucena, Ronquillo and Munera.
The latter road borders the perimeter of the natural park of the lagoons of Torrevieja and La Mata.
Tons of waste are collected on this plot and then removed hours later. Most are plant prunings, but plastic containers of products used in swimming pools and filters, and to a lesser extent household rubbish also ends up there.
But it turns out that the company has been using the plot with the permission of the city council, which says it prevents garden waste from clogging pavements and streets elsewhere.
A council spokesman said that piles of garden waste are collected by truck and put on the green for “a few hours” before being disposed of properly.
But residents point out that this happens as an ongoing process, so the site is in effect permanently in use for the purpose of waste disposal rather than as a park.
