THE National Police have made an arrest in the town of Almayate near Velez Malaga this morning for the attempted theft of 200 kilograms of avocados.
The arrest was made after an investigation was carried out by the authorities with the help of citizen information led to the identities of the three perpetrators being revealed.
According to the police report released today, the incident occurred on October 5 when a neighbour of the avocado farm noticed a suspicious abandoned vehicle at the farms entrance.
Also at the scene was a cache of nearly 200 kilograms of avocados, also abandoned by the robbers.
By the time the police arrived, the men had fled the scene on foot, leaving behind the avocados and their vehicle. It is thought that the men used the cover of darkness to cut the fence to enter the property, then when they heard the presence of a neighbour, they fled.
The neighbour called 091 at around 9am and officers arrived at the scene shortly after, identifying the vehicle’s owner and tracing his location, leading to an arrest a few hours later that morning.
After he was apprehended, two other accomplices were identified and arrested, aged 21 and 36, the same day.
