Stolen baby scandal doctor dies

A GYNECOLOGIST who was the only person ever to be tried for the stolen baby scandal in Spain has died.

Dr Eduardo Vela passed away on Sunday at the age of 86.

The Madrid Provincial court believed Vela was guilty of stealing Ines Madrigal shortly after she was born in the Spanish capital in 1969 and giving her up for adoption outside legal channels. However he was absolved of the crime because the length of time which had elapsed between 1969 and when the charges were brought meant he could not be prosecuted.

Vela had been the director of the San Ramon clinic where Ines Madrigal was born. The clinic was considered the epicentre of the alleged baby thefts set-up.
