Axarquia’s La Gran Senda Investment

THE famous La Gran Senda will receive a €600,000 investment to create footbridges and hanging walkways.

The route, sometimes known as the Great Malaga Path is a 745km loop that traverses through Axarquia and Malaga.

The investment will be carried out on stage seven of the Gran Senda de Málaga (GR-249), , between the Axarquian regions of Canillas de Aceituno and Sedella.

The money will go towards improving the walkways with new safety features and the construction of further trails along the route. It will also cover the installation of a new suspension bridge that will sit 50 metres over the Rio Almanchares.

Stage seven of the GR-249 includes 25 kilometres of trails, however there are several sections that require you to walk along a main road.

The investment will create new footpaths to take walkers off the busy highway.

The most spectacular addition will be the new footbridge, located above the banks overlooking the Rio Almanchares in a spot called La Rahige. The already placed metal footbridge will be adapted so that it meets current health and safety regulations to allow walkers to safely traverse.

Along the rest of the route, vegetation clearing, masonry works and municipal groundworks will be carried out.
