Animal welfare groups are congratulating supermarket Sainsbury for banning firework sales and urge others to follow suit.

The decision to ban fireworks from across all 2,300 of its stores across the UK came to light after the retailer replied to a tweet from a customer on Twitter.

Sally Woolf tweeted the supermarket saying “Have to say well done & thank you. Been informed local branch #Stanmore won’t be selling fireworks this year due 2 the distress it causes our pets & wildlife Any other stores doing this? Can’t thank you enough as my dog is beside herself with fear at these times.”

“Hey Sally, thanks! We won’t be selling fireworks in any of our stores this year. Hope this helps!” replied the supermarket.

The decision was welcomed by a number of animal welfare organisations and charities and of course peoples pets!
