ALICANTE council has approved a €200,000 package to help small towns in the province buy sports equipment.
Benijofar is one of the municipalities that qualify as it has a population of less than 5,000 people.
A total of 68 municipalities will benefit this year from the programme, with the cash going towards paying for basketball hoops, goals, treadmills, dressing tables, ping pong tables, dumbbells, spinning bicycles and defibrillators, among other objects.
Towns from the Vega Baja that will get grants are Algorfa, Benferri, Benijofar, Daya Nueva, Daya Vieja, Formentera del Segura, Granja de Rocamora, Jacarilla, Los Montesinos, Rafal and San Isidro.
In L’Alacanti the towns of Agost, Aigües, Busot and La Torre de les Maçanes will benefit, while in the area of Vinalopo, Algueña, Beneixama, Biar, El Camp de Mirra, Cañada, Hondon de las Nieves, Hondon de los Frailes, La Romana and Salinas qualify.
The provincial council has also announced a new pot of €50,000 that motorsports enthusiasts can apply to for cash help.
The council says that this recognises the existence of the large numbers of drivers, events and motor enthusiasts that exist in the region, which gives it huge potential to attract investment.
The grants are designed to help with the expenses that occur when trying to race competitively.
