A 23-YEAR-OLD has been sentenced to two years in prison by the Alicante Court of Appeals for coercing a minor to have sexual relations with him. The man coerced the young girl to have sexual relations with him by threatening to share explicit images that she had sent to him over WhatsApp. The abuse allegedly took place from mid-summer of 2014 until June 2015, when the victim was between 14 and 15-years-old, in two homes located in the municipality of Alcoy where the man and the girl both lived. According to the ruling, the convicted man used images of the victim to engage in full sexual intercourse “by coercion” and threatened to publish the photos which left the girl feeling that she had no choice but to do what he asked of her. The man has been accused of continuing sexual abuse, after assuming responsibility for the facts and accepting the penalty proposed by the public prosecutor and the private prosecutor at the beginning of the oral hearing. In its initial brief, the prosecutor’s office had requested eight years’ imprisonment for the young man, while the private prosecution, brought by the victim’s family, had raised that request to 14 years in prison.
