NORTH African man’s attempt to sneak into Spain hidden amid beans and peppers went pear shaped when Guardia Civil officers spotted him poking out of boxes of veggies stashed on the back of a lorry.
Officers came across the stowaway earlier this week during an inspection of vehicles disembarking from the Duba Bridge ferry.
Suspecting one of the lorries was carrying undeclared cargo they decided to take a close look at exactly what was loaded into the back. It was when the officers were shifting some of the boxes of vegetables to see if there were any other kinds of goods underneath that they touched the man’s hands.
According to the Guardia he was suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.
The discovery of the stowaway led to the detention of the truck driver for a crime against the rights of foreign citizens.
So far this year the Guardia at Almeria port have come across 108 people hidden in luggage or inside vehicles, or who have jumped off ferries coming in from North Africa as they were docking to try and make it to Spanish territory. Five of those intercepted were minors.
