THE plenary session of Orihuela Town Council has approved a motion urging the Spanish government to extend tax benefits already announced for the victims of the Gota Fria cold drop.
These already include exemption from Real Estate Tax (IBI) and Tax on Economic Activities (IAE) but now the council wants exemptions to be given for the Tax on Construction, Installations and Works (ICIO) and the Tax on Mechanical Traction Vehicles (IVTM).
The motion, which was agreed unanimously, explains that there are many properties affected by the storms that will need reforms, both minor and major. As things stand, the owners will have to pay ICIO.
The town council says this is not logical or consistent with the tragic situation experienced by many neighbours who will see their tax burden increased because of a natural disaster.
