POLICE have so far been unable to catch a speed launch that would appear to have set up a ferry service for illegal immigrants.

National police suspect it has brought hundreds of people to beaches in Estepona and Sotogrande.

It is so powerful that it can make the crossing in just 30 minutes. The price of a ticket is between €3,000 and €4,000.

National police have spotted it crossing the Strait of Gibraltar and even laid in wait for it at Sotogrande. On spotting police it simply sped off and disembarked its cargo of migrants at Estepona instead before heading back to North Africa.

Police could not keep up with it.

The police say that the boat, “like so many others of that type used by drug traffickers,” was probably acquired by the criminal organisation in Galicia, where there are several companies that manufacture them.

In October 2018, the government approved a royal decree banning these so-called ‘narcolanchas’ from the Spanish coast after verifying that the mafias were using them not only for the transport of drugs, but also for the illicit trafficking of people.

In theory such vessels can only be used by public agencies.
