Coma Scot flown home from Ibiza

A SCOTTISH man who was left in a coma after being felled by a single punch has been flown back home from Ibiza.

Gavin Robertson was assaulted on the Spanish island in an unprovoked attack on August 28.

Mr Robertson, aged 28, was put into a medically induced coma due to the seriousness of his condition. He had bleeding on the brain and had developed a severe lung infection.

It was not until three weeks later that Mr Robertson, from Stewarton in Ayrshire, came round with his mum Kirsty McMaster at his bedside.

She posted in Facebook that he had opened his eyes and was responding to questions, although his recovery was slow.

A Facebook fundraising page was set up to help pay bills as he did not have travel insurance. It has now been announced in the page that he has landed back in Scotland.

Soon after the incident his mother explained that he had been due to fly home just seven hours after the attack. He was on a stag do with friends when he was punched in the back of the head as he stood at the ATM.

“As far as I’m aware they had been having a great time,” she told the Daily Record. “They hadn’t had any problems with anyone. I’m told what happened was totally random. They were out on a night out and he went to the cash machine and the worst thing happened.”

Family friend Elaine White said on the Facebook page, where €48,000 has been collected to pay for the medical flight home, said in Sunday: “Happy to be able to tell you that Gavin was repatriated to Scotland earlier today.

“Thanks to your donations and fundraising this part of Gavin’s journey has been less of a nightmare for his family.

“Thank you all once again for your kind wishes and words of encouragement for the family and for all of your donations and fundraising.

“The journey for Gavin and his family is not over yet but has come a very long way so far.”
