ALMERIA is becoming a major player on the national golf tournament map.
The province will host the Spanish Senior Professional Men’s Championship in December.
The prestigious event will carry the ‘Costa Almeria’ tourism brand name and is seen by the provincial government as an important opportunity to promote Almeria as a top level, year-round golfing destination.
Speaking at the championship presentation at the Spanish Golf Federation headquarters in Madrid last week, federation president Gonzaga Escauriaza said it would be played in Almeria for three years.
He commented that it was “a necessary period so that people register the name and the great attractions” which the province offers, pointing out also that the public “will see that there is fantastic weather in Almeria in December.”
The championship will be broadcast on Movistar Golf and streamed on the LaLigaSportsTV channel Escauriaza revealed.
Golf Amerimar Sport Director Juan Parron described the championship as “the most important of the many we have organised at the club”, while El Ejido Mayor Francisco Gongora maintained it had been “a wise move to bring this tournament to Almeria” due to its diversity and tourism and sport attractions.
Diputacion de Almeria President Javier A. Garcia pointed out the uniqueness of the Almerimar golf course, commenting it is “possibly one of the few in Europe in which you can play with the beach on one side and snow on the other, with incredible views.”
He said he hoped the alliance between the tournament and the province lasted longer than the three years, and managed to gain Almeria recognition as a preferred national and international golf destination.
The championship will be played at Golf Almerimar in El Ejido between December 19 and 21.
