A TORNADO hit Port Adriano yesterday afternoon as a twisting element of the storms that battered the island.
Facebook was abuzz with photos and videos of the phenomenon spinning just off the coast with tailwinds felt with full force on the shore.
Residents of the island reported smaller tornadoes off the coast of Cala Major where water was picked up and sprayed all along the main road and in Palmanova sun beds and parasols on the beach were picked up and sent flying metres away.
One Facebook user, Shyvone Mhari Blom posted “Just saw a mini tornado on Palma nova beach!!!!! Picked up parasols and they were spinning in the air!!!”
High winds caused destruction in certain parts of the island with restaurants battling to secure their furniture and debris from houses and apartments being scattered across the roads.
The north of the island suffered heavy rains with reports of flooding while many roads in Palma were completely flooded and the Sa Riera flowed with some force for the first time all summer.
The weather warnings were reduced to yellow this afternoon (Wednesday) and fortunately the tornado caused no damage as it did not make landfall.
