Barcelona and Gerona are no longer on red alert, but Mallorca has been experiencing heavy rain, high winds and huge waves today, Tuesday.

Adding to the weather drama in Mallorca several twisters were spotted out at sea.

There were also reports of hailstorms in Minorca and hundreds of lightning flashes.

The AEMET State Meteorology Agency warned the Mediterranean coast of the country is facing “adverse” weather conditions with “very strong showers and storms”, and which could be “torrential” in places. The agency also warned of the possibility of persistent heavy rain in some parts which could cause flooding.

For Wednesday AEMET predicts the depression will be sitting between Algeria and Spain and forecasts particularly heavy rain on the Catalan coast and in the Valencian Community. By night time the Balearics are expected to get hit by downpours again.

Heavy rain is also on its way to Murcia and parts of Andalucia, including Almeria.

High winds are expected for much of the Mediterranean area.

Elsewhere in the country Cantabria has also been pummelled by storms in the last day, and there were yellow alerts for the Basque Country and Asturias.

In much of the country temperatures dropped between five and eight degrees on Tuesday.
