POLICE detained 59 individuals facing judicial or police charges at Almeria port during checks on passengers over the course of this year’s special OPE crossing the straits operation.

They included five with European arrest warrants hanging over them and demands for their extradition to Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium or France.

One of the detainees was wanted by a court in Monchengladbach in Germany for smuggling more than 11 kilos of amphetamines in a top-of-the-range vehicle between March and April 2018 from Belgium to Germany, where he planned to sell the drugs, Almeria police reported.

He was stopped after disembarking from a ferry from Nador in Morocco.

Earlier this month police arrested a 26-year old Moroccan wanted in the Netherlands to serve a six-year prison sentence for selling and receiving narcotics and for money laundering.

The case dates back to the beginning of last year when a Dutch police investigation led to the seizure from his home of 100 kilos of cocaine and a bag containing €120,000 and 1,468,500 Danish crowns in cash.
