CRIME per head of population in the Balearic Islands is the highest in Spain.
The islands have recorded the highest crime rate in Spain in the last 12 months with 68.4 criminal offences per 1,000 inhabitants reported in the community which is substantially higher than the national average of 46.6 offences per 1,000 inhabitants. Mallorca recorded the largest increase with 68 criminal offences per 1,000 inhabitants in the last 12 months.
It is worth pointing out that the crime rate is calculated based on the population of each community and Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza have a substantially smaller population than other places in Spain. The crime rate also increases during the summer months due to the influx of millions of tourists compared with other parts of the country.
