EU leaders will reportedly offer Britain another Brexit extension next week in a bid to avoid no-deal.

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has stated he had spoken to several EU politicians who suggested Britain could be given more time to strike a deal with Brussels.

The former Labour leader, who has been a vocal opponent of Brexit, said French President Emmanuel Macron was leading the charge for the deadline to be renegotiated.

“I think they will withdraw it. That’s what I believe they should do and I believe they will do.” Gordon Brown has insisted and added that Emmanuel Macron is ready to pull the plug on the October 31 deadline to “remove any excuse” Boris Johnson has for forcing through a no-deal Brexit.

Mr Brown made his comments during the inaugural meeting of Our Scottish Future think tank in Edinburgh.

He claimed Macron – regarded as the driving force behind the deadline when it was agreed in April – was no longer insisting upon it. Brown further suggested Macron had demanded the six-month extension rather than a year to “sound tough” to a domestic audience in the run-up to the European elections.

Brown has said: “I believe that next week the European Union will withdraw the October 31st deadline and remove the excuse that Boris Johnson has and the claim that he’s making that it’s the European Union being inflexible in their timing, and make it possible for MPs to vote against no-deal Brexit.

Boris Johnson has previously suggested that Britain will leave on 31 October “with or without a deal”.

The Prime Minister is currently facing a series of legal challenges over his decision to suspend Parliament for up to five weeks, ahead of a Queen’s Speech on October 14.
