KEEPING up with their fight against tobacco smuggling which has caused so much angst in Spain, Gibraltar customs officers have seized 750 cartons containing 150,000 cigarettes worth more than €30,000.

First in the early hours of last Sunday morning, a patrol spotted and challenged a vehicle suspected of being involved in illicit tobacco activity.

The occupants of the vehicle fled but a search revealed that their suspicions were correct and a total of 750 cartons of cigarettes were subsequently seized.

Shortly after, in a separate incident, HM Customs received reports of a traffic incident in the area of the sundial roundabout where boxes of tobacco were seen to be strewn across the road.

Upon arrival, the officers searched the vehicle and the surrounding area and found 50 cartons of tobacco which were also seized.
