A serious fire broke out at a fish farm near the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Palma on Thursday morning.

The fire consumed an area of approximately 2,000 square metres of the Piscifactoria Balear and is thought to have caused millions of euros worth of damage.

The National Police have taken charge of the investigation to find out what caused the fire on the site of what was formerly the thermal power station of Sant Joan de Déu. Insurance experts are not working out the exact amount of losses caused by the fire.

The fire, which began at around 1:30 am, affected the tanks of giltheads and sea bass in the fish farm and a metal structure with a plastic cover that houses various electrical installations inside.

The fire was not brought under control until 6.30 a.m. Fortunately no one was injured in the fire due to it happening at night and the nearby hospital got away unscathed.
