From the start of this year to the end of July,13, 326 migrants have entered Spain which is around 40% less than the 22,301 that entered during the same period of last year.

According to statistics compiled by the Interior Ministry in the first half of this year there were 465 boats that arrived on Spanish shores carrying migrants mainly from Africa, last year they recorded 962 migrant vessels. In January of this year alone the Interior Ministry recorded 4,104 irregular arrivals from abroad by sea.

The majority of the migrant boats still take the route through the Balearic Islands but this year many more have opted to journey through the Canary Islands. The route to Melilla has become much less popular with 76% less migrant traffic since last year.

Migration to Ceuta has increased but interestingly the number of migrants who try to enter the autonomous Spanish city in the North of Africa via a land border has decreased. Last year there was double the number of people caught trying to cross the border in car boots and in the backs of trucks.
