ASTONISHED neighbours watched in horror as a Serbian man brandishing a knife paraded a bloodstained countryman he was holding hostage on a balcony in the tourist hotspot of Puerto Duquesa.
Four local police officers rushed to the rescue when the men – one handcuffed, blindfolded and helpless – appeared on the balcony in full view of passing tourists yesterday afternoon (July 31).
The knifeman was threatening to kill his compatriot, say police.
Officers tried to calm the aggressor, with one keeping him talking while the others raced to the flat where they subdued the knifeman and rescued his victim.
The mayor of Manilva Mario Jiménez, has congratulated the policemen for their rapid action, professionalism and courage. He added that violence is rare in the municipality, but it is important that police act quickly when needed to ensure the safety of citizens.
