Retired 73-year-old firefighter with cancer completes 4,000-kilometre round trip through Spain

A RETIRED firefighter with cancer has circumnavigated Spain on an electric bicycle covering over 4,000 kilometres at the age of 73.

Miguel Vivo set off from Bilbao with a friend in June and whereas his friend had to stop from exhaustion in Murcia, Vivo went on to complete the full circuit of Spain finishing in Basilica de Bogoña a month later.

Vivo packed more than 50 kilograms of gear that made it even more difficult to pedal through the fierce heat.

He had a tent with him so he could set up camp easily but if the option was available he would stay in hostels or guest houses on the Camino de Santiago route.

The Bilbao firefighter is no stranger to adventure, having spent a large portion of his life canoeing, trekking, paragliding and motorcycling across South East Asia for three months.

This is sadly his last big adventure as he puts it in his biography. He has been suffering from cancer for some time and does not feel up to another grand world tour but he commented in his book that if he were to die tomorrow, at least he has lived an intense life.
