British expat woman dies in Spanish house fire

A BRITISH woman has died in a house fire in Northern Spain.

Named only as Michelle I. M., the 58-year-old was living alone in a house in La Civera, a neighbourhood of the village of Olba (Teruel).

Just the four walls were left standing after flames swept through the two-storey building.

Neighbour Carlos Villacreces said that the walls of the house “made a kind of chimney through which the flames were going out.” He alerted emergency services who raced to the scene, but it was too late to save Michelle, who was described as “a kind and good woman.”

Once the fire had been extinguished, police had to wait for smoke to clear and the heat from the fierce fire to die down before entering the property.

They discovered the body about two metres from the front door.

The victim had lived in the area for more than 10 years and owned several properties which she let out.

The town council has made contact with Michelle’s family, who live in the UK
