Kamikaze driver dies after speeding at 200 kph in wrong direction

A ‘kamikaze’ driver who drove at speeds of up to 200 kph on the wrong side of the road has died and five people injured after he crashed into another car.

Two children aged four and five were amongst the hurt, with emergency services saying their injuries were ‘slight.’

The accident happened last night (July 15) on the A-8 motorway in Gijon at 11.39 pm.

A Guardia Civil patrol had spotted the car travelling at very high speeds but before they could intercept the vehicle and divert other traffic away, it hit a car. Another then ploughed into the wreckage.

The most seriously injured was a 69-year-old man who was treated by the medics then taken to the San Agustín Hospital in a serious condition. He had to be cut from his car by Gijon firefighters.

A woman was also taken to hospital, her condition is unknown while a 48-year-old man and the two children were slightly hurt but taken to hospital for check-ups.

The body of the 52-year-old had to be cut from the wreckage of his car.
