GIBRALTAR police have arrested the captain and the chief officer of the Iranian tanker seized on suspicion it was taking crude oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions.
A police statement said the arrest of the two Grace 1 officers, both Indian nationals, followed a search of the ship and the seizure and examination of documents and electronic devices.
The police revealed the investigation is ongoing and the Grace 1 remains detained.
A detachment of Royal Marines assisted the Gibraltar police in intercepting the Iranian vessel last week off the coast of the British territory. Today’s detention of the captain and the chief officer comes as tensions between the UK and Iran continue to rise.
On Tuesday the British Government increased the threat to British ships sailing in Iranian waters in the Gulf to the highest level. On Wednesday the Ministry of Defence reported Iranian boats tried to impede the passage of a British tanker through the Strait of Hormuz, forcing a Royal Navy frigate to get between them.
