Three Spanish universities ranked in top 20

IN a recent survey carried out by the Times Higher Education magazine, three Spanish universities are ranked in the top 20 in the EU, with one only being beaten by Oxford and Cambridge in the UK.

The European Teaching Ranking 2019 was conducted after interviewing 125,000 students on their opinions of universities around Europe, taking into account educational quality, student satisfaction and the relationship of young people with their teachers and the learning environment.

The list is predominantly filled with UK universities however the University of Navarra has reached third position thanks to its dedication to meeting students’ needs.

“We measure everything: we analyze what the student values the most, the complaints they make, what they say can be improved, we do a lot of surveys to the students and any teacher who does not perform well we tell them and we take measures”, explained Navarra principal Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero.

Also making the list was the University of Barcelona and the University of Madrid.

Spanish universities have come under scrutiny recently however after a study conducted by Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain showed that students who obtain an honours degree are not guaranteed a specialist career, with 37.1 per cent of graduates employed in low skilled jobs, much higher than the European average.

The Minister of education Francisco Michavila stated that “The educational quality standards are high and the academic programs are very similar, which shows that there is no problem in the universities.”

This leads us to believe the problem lies with the Spanish employment system as a whole which is a much larger and more complex issue.

It is not all doom and gloom however as industries such as Medicine, Electrical Engineering, IT and Pharmaceutical are all experiencing high employability for graduates.
