Millions to be invested into police wages

THE union Jupol, made up of members of the National Police and the Guardia Civil have reached an absolute majority for millions to be invested into police wages. There’s a demand for an extra €700 million to be invested in police wages across the country.

The newly formed police union is fighting for their wages to be brought up to the level of other forces operating in the country, specifically the Catalan police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra. 

The council members voted an eight to six majority in favour of the action and they have brought the notion to the current Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska with the warning that if the terms aren’t met there will be “permanent collective conflict.” 

Initially a tentative agreement was reached by the former interior minister Juan Ignacio Zoido to inject the forces with €807 million to increase salaries, however a section of the Spanish police forces agreed this was not sufficient and formed union Jupol to fight the proposed amounts.

The union are fighting for €1,500 million in total to bring wages up to a satisfactory level, so with €807 million already invested, the planned action is dependent of the agreement of a further €700,000 million.

Marlaska insists that the first point of call is dialogue between the two sides, and that demands are “never positive” to reach an agreement.

A meeting is expected to take place today (July 8) to discuss the proposition.
