Hundreds turn out for anti bull run protest in Pamplona

THE animal rights organisation Anima Naturalis Espana held their 16th consecutive protest yesterday in the town of Pamplona in protest to the historic Bull Run.

Activists gathered in the streets and 54 members of Anima Naturalis as well as representatives from PETA staged a visually powerful lie down protest, half naked, and laying in the chalk outlines of the 54 bulls that will die at the end of this years event.

Aida Gascón, director of Anima Naturalis in Spain, stated that “the debate about the future of bullfighting in Spain has never been more alive and the authorities have the duty to position themselves before the subject without half measures”

Official data from the Ministry of Culture has shown a decline in bull fighting over the past 15 years. Since 2007 the sport has seen a decline of 58.4 percent, 2.1 percent since 2017.

Bull fighting events have also seen a marked decrease in audiences, with only 5 percent of the population saying they attended an event during 2015-16, with most of those saying they only did so because admission was free.
