Spanish rail workers set to strike on Monday July 15 during busy summer period

A TRADE UNION representing Spanish workers at the Renfe railway company has called a strike for Monday July 15 after talks with bosses on pay and conditions broke down.

CCOO said negotiations with Renfe executives failed to secure satisfactory concessions on creating jobs, reducing working hours and raising pay.

The 24-hour strike is set to take place on one of the busiest days for the publicly-owned rail company. Passengers travelling to different parts of Spain for summer holidays could face disruption, delays and cancellations if the strike goes ahead.

CCOO said it would be open to negotiating with Renfe if the company is willing to make concessions.

Renfe has yet to comment on the strike. The Development Ministry is expected to say which services will still run and which will be cancelled in the coming days.
