A PALMA court has turned down a bail request from the girlfriend of a 16-year-old Ecuadorian boy who is accused of murdering his mother.

The Spanish girl, aged 17, presents flight risk and should be held in the Mallorca’s Es Fusteret secure centre given the seriousness of the events, according to the judge.

She has been held at the centre since May 28. Gloria Zavala’s son and the main suspect in her killing, was sent to Es Pinaret.

The couple left Mallorca the day before the 53-year-old woman’s body was found. At her s’Arenal home. The children slept one night at the Tres Estrellas campsite in Gava, Barcelona then fled to Belgium the next day.

The girl has told police she thought they were going on a romantic getaway. They spent six nights at the Bentley hotel in Schaerbeek (Brussels) until the Belgian police knocked on their door at six o’clock in the morning and arrested them.

The minor explained to the judge that she found out what had happened after reading the news from Brussels. She confessed that her boyfriend was the perpetrator of the May 10 crime. The boy told her that he had an argument with his mother, with whom he had a bad relationship.

He claims that his mother attacked him with a stick and he hit her. The victim fell to the ground, striking her head and fell unconscious. At that stage it is alleged her son suffocated her, then hid her body in a chest in the garage of their home. She was discovered by a housemate when he returned from a break of a few days and noticed a strong smell.
