Babies rescued from car in Spain’s heatwave in Menorca

POLICE have rescued two babies’ ages one month and 13 months after they were left alone in a car fort 30 minutes while their parents went shopping during a heatwave.

A security guard at a supermarket in Mahon (Menorca) spotted the infants on the backseat of the car with the windows raised.

Although the car was parked under a sunshade in the carpark, only the front seats were in shadow, with the babies lying in the glare of the sun in temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius.

A call was put out over the supermarket tannoy for the parents, and National Police were called while the search for the parents continued.

Officers quickly arrived and immediately smashed a window to reach the children. At that moment a Moroccan couple turned up, saying they had only popped in to the shop to pick up a couple of items. They had not wanted to wake the children, they said.

An ambulance attended the scene and medics gave the youngsters a clean bill of health.

Police have drawn up a report and submitted it to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
